Self-Love Belongs in the Workplace Too

When most people think about self-love, they imagine bubble baths, journaling, or setting personal boundaries. And while all of that is important, self-love doesn’t end when we walk into the office, open our laptops, or hop on that Zoom call.

As the author of I Love Me More, I often talk about self-love in the context of our personal lives: our relationships, our healing, our happiness. But over the years, I’ve learned that one of the most powerful (and overlooked) places to practice self-love is at work.

The workplace can be filled with pressure to prove yourself, please others, and stay quiet about your worth. But if you truly love and respect yourself, you’ll advocate for yourself in every room you’re in, including the ones with fluorescent lighting and deadlines.

Here are nine ways you can practice self-love in your career, starting today:

✅ 1. Apply for that job anyway.

Don’t let a few missing qualifications hold you back. You don’t need to meet every requirement to be a great fit. Believe in your potential and trust your ability to grow into the role. That’s self-love in action.

✅ 2. Advocate for yourself.

Self-love means making sure your contributions are seen and valued. Share your accomplishments with your manager and team. Let them know how your work is impacting the company. This isn’t bragging. It’s owning your value.

✅ 3. Don’t wait for recognition or promotions.

Instead of hoping someone notices you, speak up about your goals and aspirations. Ask for feedback. Get clarity on what it takes to move forward. Steer your career in the direction you want it to go.

✅ 4. Say no to non-promotable tasks.

You are not obligated to take on every “helpful” task that doesn’t support your growth, like planning birthday parties, taking meeting notes, or organizing snacks. Your time is valuable. Spend it on work that aligns with your career path.

✅ 5. Release self-criticism.

The workplace is hard enough without you being hard on yourself. Catch the negative self-talk and replace it with compassion. You’re doing your best, and that deserves grace, not judgment.

✅ 6. Set and hold boundaries.

You don’t have to say yes to everything. Protect your energy by setting clear limits on your time, your workload, and your availability. Boundaries are not just allowed, they’re essential.

✅ 7. Celebrate your wins.

Don’t minimize your progress. Keep a record of your achievements, no matter how small. Talk about them. Reflect on them. Let yourself feel proud. You’ve earned it.

✅ 8. Invest in yourself.

Whether it’s a course, a mentor, a coach, or time to rest—put resources toward your own growth. Show yourself you’re worth the investment.

✅ 9. Let go of perfectionism.

Perfection is a moving target. Most of the time, 80% is more than enough. Stop holding yourself back with impossible standards. Aim for progress, not paralysis.

You deserve to thrive in your career, not just survive. And that begins with treating yourself like someone who matters. Because you do.

Self-love at work might look different for each of us. But it’s always about honoring your worth.
